You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.
“What do you want to grow up to be??” Well, a million dollar question that has been bombarded at almost all of us at some point in time in our lives? So let us today talk about the evergreen daunting issue–“our career and growth options”
As we know that growing old is a continuous process, it never pauses or sizes, till the time we allow it to come to a standstill. In my life, I have always followed a principle, firstly to identify a direction and start working towards it. Although without regrets, I have to state that the directions in my career path have been varied and have changed time to time, depending on the circumstances and personal choices at different stages of my life. But there is one commonality that I have observed over the years, is that whatever I did, it did bring along a certain amount of pleasure in my life and all my career rides have been phenomenal learning experiences both professionally and personally.
Now let us look into the various factors that go into choosing a career. Thus, in my opinion, the foremost step is the identification of one’s own self- what we call “Self-Reflection” – what do you want to be? An aspect that absolutely depends on one’s personality and interests. It is the bottom line mantra for making the right career choice and also for its successful application down the line. Next, we need to identify the “External Environment” and see around us the possible options that are open to us. Of course, this can be drawn from resources available to us like – on the internet, our grapevines and discussions with various connections. Believe me, the more you brainstorm with peers and family members, the more the possibility of identifying new career options will rise up, the options that you may have not even thought of before.
Now, I think with all this homework, one can comfortably reach the threshold of next stage. Yes, that is “Making the Final Decision”… a heads up on what you see yourself to be in the coming years. Now we need to work towards that direction with an urge to excel and flourish in our choices. For all the choices that we make at this point, may not be 100 % correct, but the probability of its success id quite high.
One thing we all need to absorb is that in life, there is no “Gospel Truth”, Life is all about changes and situations. We may flourish, or we may not. so as they say …
” the best way to predict the future is to create it “
